How to Tell When a Hass Avocado Is Perfectly Ripe

There's nothing more disappointing than slicing into an avocado only to find it's rock-hard inside — or worse, brown and mushy. As avocado growers, this is a question we get all the time: how do I know when it's ready?

Here's the good news: with a few simple checks, you can pick the perfect avocado every time. Here are the methods we use at Patel Ranch.

1. Check the Color

A ripe Hass avocado has dark, almost black skin. When you buy them at the store, they're often bright green — that means they need a few more days on the counter. As the avocado ripens, the skin transitions from green to a deep purplish-black. If it's uniformly dark, you're getting close.

2. The Gentle Squeeze Test

This is the most reliable method. Hold the avocado in the palm of your hand and apply gentle, even pressure — don't press with your fingertips, as that can cause bruising. A ripe avocado will yield slightly to pressure, like a tennis ball with a little give. If it feels firm, it needs more time. If it feels overly soft or hollow, it's past its prime.

3. The Stem Trick

Pop off the small stem cap at the top of the avocado. If the area underneath is green, the avocado is ripe and ready. If it's brown, the fruit is overripe. If the stem doesn't come off easily, it's not ready yet. This trick works best as a confirmation after the squeeze test.

4. Speeding Up the Ripening Process

Bought avocados that aren't ripe yet? Place them in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple. The ethylene gas released by the other fruit speeds up ripening. At room temperature, most avocados ripen in 2–5 days. Once ripe, transfer them to the fridge to slow things down — they'll keep for another 2–3 days.

5. A Note from Our Grove

One thing most people don't realize: avocados don't ripen on the tree. They only begin to soften after they're picked. That's why timing the harvest is so critical. At Patel Ranch, we let our California Hass avocados hang on the tree as long as possible. The longer they stay, the higher the oil content — and the richer and creamier the flavor.

When you buy direct from a farm like ours, you're getting fruit that was picked at the optimal moment, not weeks ahead of schedule for a long supply chain. The difference in taste is remarkable.
