The most popular dining spot at Patel Ranch doesn't serve avocados.
We set up a Birdfy smart bird feeder at the ranch, and it has quietly become our favorite window into the land. The feeder's camera catches feathered visitors stopping by all day — quick snack stops, surprise appearances, and a few regulars who clearly think the place is theirs.

Why we're paying attention to birds
We're in the middle of rebuilding a 20-acre avocado grove in De Luz — stumping tired trees back to stumps for fresh regrowth, mulching the cut material back into the soil, and clearing years of overgrowth. That work changes the land, and wildlife notices before people do.
Birds showing up in numbers is a plain, honest signal: the grove is becoming a living place again, not just a work site. The recent fall rains helped too — hillsides that spent the summer golden and dry are turning green again, and with green comes insects, seeds, and cover.
What the feeder has actually shown us
- Birds visit all day, not just at dawn — the feeder camera catches traffic we'd never see on a walk-through.
- The regulars are a mix: small birds darting in and out, plus bigger visitors that linger. We don't name species from blurry frames — the camera shows us plenty without guessing.
- The feeder sits in a grove that's still a work zone in places, and the birds don't seem to mind. That's encouraging for a rebuild that's only partway done.
An honest caveat
A bird feeder is not pest control, and we don't pretend it is. The birds visiting the feeder aren't patrolling our avocado trees. What the feeder gives us is simpler and still valuable: proof that the habitat we're rebuilding supports life beyond the crop, and a daily reason to watch the land closely.
That's the same reason we run cameras and sensors across the ranch — the grove tells you how it's doing if you give it a way to show you.
