Our grove finally has a brain box — well, a shed. This week we set up a dedicated shed down in the avocado grove that gives our battery and networking equipment a real home, plus some storage space for tools. It sounds small, but it is the first permanent piece of the off-grid smart-farm setup we are building at Patel Ranch.
Watch it come together in our October 20 build reel on Instagram.
What's in the shed
- A BLUETTI battery bank that powers our wireless bridge and Wi-Fi router
- Starlink connectivity reaching the remote parts of the ranch
- Our Hunter Hydrawise smart irrigation controller and Hunter solenoid valves
- Storage space for grove tools
Why connectivity matters in an avocado grove
Our 20 acres sit in the De Luz hills, and cell signal is not something you can count on out here. A weather-based irrigation controller that cannot phone home is just an expensive timer. With the point-to-point wireless bridge and the outdoor router living in the shed, the controller stays connected — which means irrigation decisions can follow actual weather instead of a fixed schedule.
This also sets up everything else we have planned: ranch cameras, grove telemetry, and monitoring the well and pump from anywhere.
Built scrappy on purpose
The shed base went together with leftover wooden crates and plywood — materials we already had on the ranch. Nothing about this build needed to be fancy. It needed to be dry, ventilated, and close to the equipment. First-time farmers learn fast: spend money where it earns a return, and improvise everywhere else.
What's next
The battery bank recharges from two solar panels, and a third battery unit brings the whole setup to just under 5 kWh of storage. Little by little, our family-run ranch is getting its own off-grid nervous system — power, connectivity, and controls that work without the grid ever showing up.
