We took freshly picked Valencia oranges from Patel Ranch to a school event and squeezed them into juice. No added sugar, no concentrates, nothing from a carton — just fruit, a juicer, and a line of kids coming back for seconds.
We posted the juicing in action on Instagram — here's the fuller story.
Why Valencias make the best juice
Not all oranges are juicing oranges. Valencias are the classic juice variety for a reason: sweet, juicy, and bred to be dripping with it. A good Valencia is practically a juice box with a peel.
Ours grow in De Luz's granite soil with warm days and cool nights, which pushes the sugar up. You can taste the difference against store-bought juice before you finish the first cup — no sugar needed because the fruit already did the work.
The blends that stole the show
Plain fresh-squeezed Valencia is hard to beat, but we brought a few twists:
- Valencia + pomegranate — the house favorite. Sweet orange with tart pomegranate depth; the color alone sells it.
- Valencia + grapes + pineapple — the "fruit cocktail" juice. Tastes like summer, gone in seconds.
Everything was fresh fruit. Nothing else in the cup.
Real fruit vs. the carton
Most orange juice in stores is pasteurized, stored for months, and flavored back up after processing strips the taste out. Fresh-squeezed is a different product entirely — brighter, more aromatic, alive.
That's the whole argument for farm-direct in one cup: fewer steps between the tree and you, and you can taste every step that was skipped.
From our grove to the community
We're a family farm, and days like this are why. The oranges were picked at Patel Ranch and juiced for the event, then drunk by kids who got to see exactly where their juice came from. That's a short supply chain.
We'll keep showing up with fruit. It's the best marketing we have — and the most fun part of the job.
